The United States Air Force has confirmed that the next generation of updated B-52s will be known as the B-52J. The service's latest FY 2024 budget document confirms - “Any B-52H aircraft modified with the new commercial engines and associated subsystems are designated as B-52J".
The main features of the upgraded aircraft will be new Rolls Royce F-130 engines and a new Ryatheon AN/APG-79 active, electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar system.
The programme is planned to update 76 B-52Hs with the first aircraft in service before the end of the 2020s.
